For most of my career, “technology disruption” has meant new trading systems, new data sources, new infrastructure. Today, it’s something more fundamental: the tools we use to see, imagine, and tell stories are learning to think.
Artificial intelligence has moved from the margins of post-production to the center of the creative stack. In a few short years, we’ve gone from experimental upscaling tools to full pipelines where models can draft scripts, storyboard scenes, generate concept art, simulate camera moves, localize dialogue, and even synthesize performances.
Film is becoming one of the clearest examples of what happens when algorithms meet craft. And it’s not just about cheaper effects or faster edits; it’s about reframing what “creative work” looks like, who participates in it, and how value is shared.
In this piece, I want to lay out how I see AI changing the film ecosystem, where the real leverage is, and what responsible adoption looks like for studios, streamers, and independent creators.
The State of AI: From Tricks to Toolchains
If you strip away the hype, three things have shifted in AI over the last few years that matter for film:
Models have become multimodal.
We now have systems that can work with text, images, audio, and video together. That means a prompt, a script, a reference image, and a soundtrack can all feed the same pipeline.Quality has crossed a psychological threshold.
Early AI effects looked like “AI effects.” Today, for many applications—previsualization, concept art, background plates, certain secondary shots—the output is good enough that the average viewer can’t tell, or doesn’t care.Tooling is integrating into existing workflows.
The real story isn’t standalone demos; it’s AI quietly embedded into Adobe, Resolve, Unreal, and proprietary studio tools. Editors and VFX artists are using AI every day under the hood, often without calling it that.
When you have multimodal models, production-quality output, and deep integration into the tools professionals already use, you don’t have a novelty—you have a new baseline.
Where AI Is Already Reshaping the Film Pipeline
Think of the film pipeline as four broad stages: development, pre-production, production, and post. AI now touches each of them.
Development: From Ideas to Script Drafts
AI is not replacing great writers—but it is changing how they work.
Concept exploration.
Writers and producers are using language models to explore variations on loglines, character backstories, and world-building details. It’s not about originality from the model; it’s about speed of iteration for the human.First-pass treatments and synopses.
Given a premise, AI can generate multiple outlines or treatments that a writer then critiques, splices, and refines. This can compress weeks of grunt work into days.Market-aware ideation.
With the right data and care around bias, AI can help identify genre trends, themes, and formats that resonate with specific audiences—without dictating creative choices.
The real value here is not in asking a model to “write a screenplay,” but in giving professionals a structured collaborator that’s tireless, fast, and happy to produce a bad first draft for you to tear apart.
Pre-Production: Images Before Cameras Roll
Pre-production is where AI is already saving serious time and money.

Generative models can create dozens of style explorations, environments, or costume variations in a fraction of the time it took human-only teams. Art directors then curate, refine, and set the visual language.Storyboards and pre-visualization.
Models that generate rough, animatic-style shots from text prompts or script excerpts allow directors and DPs to block scenes and explore coverage long before stepping onto set.Location scouting.
With AI-enhanced 3D reconstruction and generative fill, production teams can trial “what if” environments virtually—before committing to travel or builds.
What matters strategically is that AI shifts pre-production from a series of expensive, discrete bets to a low-cost exploration phase. You can kill bad ideas earlier and allocate resources to the ones that earn it.
Production: Augmenting, Not Replacing
On set, AI is less about synthetic performers (for now) and more about augmenting crews.

AI-assisted tools can composite rough VFX into the live camera feed, giving directors a more accurate sense of framing and performance against virtual elements.Technical assistance.
Systems can recommend camera settings, flag continuity issues, or validate that coverage matches the shot list—acting as a second pair of eyes for script supervisors and DPs.Synthetic stand-ins.
For dangerous or complex shots, AI-generated doubles can be used in pre-vis or even final shots, reducing risk and cost when used transparently and with consent.
The key principle: AI on set should serve the crew, not the other way around. When it’s used to remove friction and risk, adoption goes smoothly. When it tries to replace craft outright, resistance (rightly) follows.
Post-Production: The Quiet Revolution
Post is where AI has been working the longest.
Upscaling, clean-up, and restoration.
AI-powered tools can denoise, upscale, and restore footage with astonishing fidelity—opening up new possibilities for catalog content and archival material.Editing assistance.
Speech-to-text and scene detection algorithms already accelerate rough cuts, transcriptions, and assembly. Editors stay in control, but the system handles a lot of the mechanical work.Localization and personalization.
AI dubbing and lip-sync tools can make localization faster and more consistent, while recommendation algorithms on platforms determine which cut, trailer, or thumbnail a viewer sees.
In post, the best AI tools are invisible: they remove drudgery, not creative judgment.
AI in Film: Who Captures the Value?
Whenever technology changes a value chain, the important question is not “what is possible?” but “who benefits?”
In the AI–film convergence, there are three competing forces:
Cost pressure.
Studios and streamers see AI as a way to reduce budgets for VFX, post, and localization. That’s real—some tasks will simply become cheaper.Creative ambition.
Directors and showrunners see AI as a way to expand the canvas: more iterations, more daring visuals, more experimentation.Labor and rights.
Unions, performers, and craftspeople rightly focus on control of their likeness, their voice, their data, and their economic share of the upside.
Long-term, sustainable value comes when these forces are balanced. If AI is treated purely as a cost-cutting weapon, you may get short-term gains and long-term damage—to quality, to talent relationships, and to brand.
The more strategic approach is to frame AI as a leverage multiplier:
Can we tell stories we couldn’t afford before?
Can we give mid-budget films tools that only tentpoles used to have?
Can we shorten cycles between idea, pilot, and audience feedback without burning out crews?
When those are the questions, value accrues not just to the largest players, but to smart independents as well.
Rights, Consent, and the New “Contracts of Trust”
The most sensitive frontier is the use of AI in synthetic performance and likeness—faces, voices, and bodies reproduced or altered by models.
Here, the technology is moving faster than contracts and norms, which means responsible players have to lead. In practice, that means:
Explicit, informed consent.
Actors and other creatives should knowingly authorize specific uses of their likeness, voice, or work—both now and in the future. Blanket, perpetual rights buried in boilerplate are a recipe for backlash and litigation.Clear compensation structures.
If an actor’s likeness or voice is reused via AI, there should be transparent payment models for initial use and reuse. The same principle applies to writers, artists, and other creators whose work trains proprietary models.Traceability.
Studios need internal systems to track when and where AI-generated or AI-altered contributions are used, and which underlying rights are implicated.Attribution and labeling where appropriate.
In many contexts, audiences and partners should know when something is AI-generated, especially when it affects trust (e.g., documentaries, news-adjacent content).
These are not just legal issues; they’re strategic. A studio or platform known for abusing AI will struggle to attract top talent. One known for fair, transparent practices will have its pick of collaborators—even in a highly automated future.
Data Is the New Backlot
For AI in film, the new “backlot” is not just a physical space—it’s your data estate.
To build durable advantage, creators and platforms need to think about:
Structured knowledge of their own content.
Scripts, shot lists, storyboards, production notes, and final cuts are all raw material for internal models. The better organized and rights-cleared this material is, the more leverage you have.Audience interaction data.
Completion rates, skip moments, rewatch patterns, and segment-level engagement can inform both creative decisions and personalization—if used with care for privacy and ethics.Model governance.
Not every dataset should train every model. You need policies around what content can be used, under what rights, and for what purposes.
The studios and platforms that treat data as a first-class asset—documented, governed, strategically exploited—will be the ones that build AI capabilities competitors can’t easily copy.
Independent Creators: The “Small Studio, Big Stack” Era
One of the underappreciated aspects of AI in film is what it does for independents.
A small team with:
access to strong generative tools,
a disciplined pipeline, and
a clear understanding of audience niches
can now produce work that would have required far larger budgets a decade ago. They can:
Develop and test concepts faster than large organizations encumbered by process.
Use AI for pre-vis, design, and even limited VFX to deliver “bigger than budget” visuals.
Build direct relationships with communities and use AI to personalize marketing and distribution.
The barrier is no longer just money; it’s taste, discipline, and data. Those who treat AI as a serious craft component—not a gimmick—can punch far above their weight.
How to Approach AI in Film Strategically
For executives, producers, and investors, the question is: how do we lean in without losing the plot? A few principles I believe in:
Lead with use cases, not tools.
Start from “Where do we need more freedom, speed, or insight?” rather than “What can this model do?” The best AI initiatives feel like natural extensions of your existing priorities.Co-design with the people who will use it.
Editors, VFX supervisors, production designers, and line producers should be in the room when you design AI workflows. If the tools don’t respect their craft, they won’t be used.Invest in internal literacy.
You don’t need every creative to be an ML engineer, but you do need a shared vocabulary about what AI can and cannot do, where the risks are, and how to evaluate vendor claims.Build an ethical and legal framework early.
Rights, consent, and compensation are not afterthoughts. Bake them into contracts, systems, and culture from day one.Measure what matters.
Track not just cost savings, but creative iteration speed, time-to-greenlight, audience response, and talent satisfaction. AI should show up in these metrics, not just in a line item under “software.”
The Opportunity in Front of Us
Film has always evolved with technology: sound, color, digital cameras, nonlinear editing, CG. Each wave was initially seen as a threat; each ultimately became a new grammar for storytelling.
AI is different mainly in how fast it’s moving and how deeply it touches the creative core. That makes it exciting—and uncomfortable.
But if we approach it with:
respect for craft,
clarity about rights and incentives, and
a willingness to redesign processes, not just bolt tools onto them,
then AI can be the next major expansion of what stories we can tell, who gets to tell them, and how quickly we can test what resonates with the world.
